I don’t believe in having strict rules in my classes, however I do have some recommended tips and guidelines that can help you get the most out of your practice.
- Please try to arrive 5-10 minutes early to allow yourself time to set up and prepare for your practice.
- If you are running late, please still come, I just ask that you enter as quietly as possible to minimize disruption to your fellow students. We all run late on occasion, and when we’re rushed, we can really use Yoga!
- Feel free to socialize with your fellow students before and after class. Getting to know each other helps build a sense of community.
- It’s best to practice on an empty stomach if possible. If you need to eat prior to class, have a light snack. It’s recommended to wait at least 1 hour after eating a light meal or 2-3 hours after a heavier meal, however you know your body and your needs best.
- Generally, it’s recommended not to drink water or other beverages during class if possible. If you do need to drink, it’s best for water or other beverages to be warm or room temperature. The best practice is to have a glass of lukewarm water about 30 minutes prior to class then nothing more until after class. When we practice Yoga, we increase prana and we also build agni. Drinking water (especially cold water) during class can dampen agni and reduce the benefits of our practice. If you’re sensitive to dry air, prone to coughing during class or prone to thirst, it’s fine to drink water or tea as needed, but warm or room temperature beverages are best.
- Please turn off cell phones. If you choose to keep your phone on, please completely silence it (i.e. no vibrations). Cell phones can be very disruptive for you and for everyone else.
- Be conscious of the amount of space you are taking up and be willing to shift your mat to make room for others.
- Bring your own mat and something to sit on (folded blanket or towel, thin Yoga block).
- Other props are not required (except for Restorative Yoga), however you are welcome to bring any props that you like for your practice.
- Remember that Yoga is a mind-body-spirit practice, not exercise. Asana is important, but there is much more to Yoga than the physical body.
- Yoga is non-competitive. Pay attention to your own practice and don’t worry about anyone else.
- Listen to your body and modify as needed. There will always be some poses that are just not right for our bodies, and that’s OK. Opting out of something is always an option.
- Please stay until the end of class. Savasana is one of the most important parts of the class. If you need to leave early, please do so before the class is settled in savasana.
- We tend to cool down in savasana, you may wish to dress in layers or at least have something to keep you warm (sweater, blanket, socks).
- You are responsible for your own practice. Please be aware of the Terms and Conditions and Waiver and Release.
- Have fun!
