“I found the Ayurveda Workshop interesting and informative. Krista is very knowledgeable and passionate. I want to learn more.”
Elisabeth R., Edmonton

Ayurveda has been around for thousands of years. It is the science of life and the “sister science” of Yoga. Ayurveda teaches us diet and lifestyle practices to help us live in accordance with our individual constitution, or dosha. Essentially, we learn to dance with nature. Ayurveda is suitable for everyone.
Panchamahabhuta
Panchamahabhuta refers to the five great elements. Everything – including you – is made up of the five great elements, which are Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether. These elements help form the basis of Ayurveda. Once we learn our constitution, we can choose foods and lifestyle practices that balance our elemental make-up.
Tridosha
Tridosha refers to the three doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The doshas are central to Ayurveda. Each dosha is a combination of two of the five elements, and as a result, each dosha has different characteristics and different things that balance it and that aggravate it. Vata is Air and Ether, Pitta is Fire and Water and Kapha is Earth and Water. Everyone has all three doshas, but we all have them in different quanitities. Many people have dual-doshas, where two doshas are of fairly equal quanity and the third is minimal, some are primarily one dosha with the other two doshas being lower in quantity and a lucky few are tridoshic, where all three doshas are equally balanced.
Balance
Ayurveda is about balance. When our doshas are out of balance or aggravated, we come into a state of dis-ease. Ayurveda identifies the imbalance and treats the issue at the root cause rather than treating symptoms – one of the ways that Ayurveda is different from Western medicine. A prolonged state of imbalance can lead to a build up of ama (toxins) in the body, which can then manifest as various health challenges.

Qualifications
I have been interested in Ayurveda since I first heard the word on a trip to Sri Lanka in 1997, however I didn’t start to explore it in depth until about 15 years later when it was discussed during a Yoga event I attended.
Since then, I have completed Ayurvedic Yoga Therapy Level 1 and Level 2 trainings and approximately 100 hours of additional Ayurvedic trainings. I also have a vast collection of books and references on Ayurveda. Like Yoga, Ayruveda is a massive subject, and I continue to take courses and trainings to increase my knowledge.
I practice what I teach. I have implemented many diet and lifestyle practices specific to my dosha and try to live as Ayurvedically as possible.
Dislaimer: I have completed many trainings in Ayurveda and am qualified as an Ayurvedic Consultant, however I am not an Ayurvedic or medical physician. I will suggest diet and lifestyle changes to help you work toward optimal health and will help guide you to gradually implement them. Changes need to be made gradually and it can take time to bring things into balance, particularly if you have been chronically out of balance. If you have serious health concerns, please consult a healthcare professional.
