“After several years of attending Krista’s yoga classes, I still enjoy how she calmly and effectively communicates and guides us through our yoga poses! Her classes have definitely improved my flexibility.”

Finding My Path

I believe that I was always meant to teach Yoga, it just took me a while to find my way here.  I was  a dancer in my teens and was quite flexible, but I was very shy and not at all self-confident, so I was shocked when my Grade 10 phys ed teacher asked me if I would teach aerobics to the school.  I refused, but I always wished I had the confidence to lead that class.  I ended up pursuing a career in Medical Laboratory Technology, which took me overseas for four years.  While there, I found myself wishing that I taught Yoga so I could teach classes on the compound – and I could actually picture it.  This is all rather odd because I had never even set foot on a Yoga mat.  Fast forward to 2001, married with one daughter, living in Bullhead City Arizona and the purchase of my first Yoga mat.  I began a home Yoga practice, which continued off and on over the years as we moved back to Edmonton and had two more daughters.  By 2011, in addition to my home practice, I had been attending regular classes at my local YMCA for a few  years and had just begun taking Yoga classes at a local studio.

Becoming a Teacher

In the Spring of 2011, the YMCA was in desperate need of a sub for a class and asked me to do it.  I had never taught a class in my life, and it terrified me, but not wanting to pass up the opportunity a second time in my life, I heard myself saying “yes”.  I taught the class, and the rest is history. I became a certified YMCA Instructor in 2011, earned my AFLCA certification in the Mind/Body designation in 2012, followed by my 200 hour Yoga Teacher certification in 2013.   In the fall of 2015, I reached 1000 hours of teaching, thus earning the designation E-RYT200 (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher, 200 hours).  In September, 2016, I received my 300 hour certification with the Yoga Association of Alberta and in August of 2017, I completed my 500 hour certification through Yoga For Today.  I now hold E-RYT500 designation with Yoga Alliance and am also a Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (YACEP). In January 2025, I became a Senior Teacher (1000 Hr) with the Yoga Association of Alberta and have taught over 4500 classes.

Always a Student

I will always be a student of Yoga as well as a teacher and have continued to learn and go deeper into my own practice.  I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to study with many amazing teachers over the years, including the late Friedel Khattab (the first Yoga Teacher in Edmonton) and Gerda Krebs (the first graduate from Friedel’s teacher training program in 1971).  Friedel Khattab was also one of the founders of The Yoga Association of Alberta (YAA) in 1976. I am proud to be a YAA Certified Teacher and also to be employed by the YAA in administration. I have trained in many formats of Yoga and am also a Reiki Level 2 Practitioner and Ayurvedic Consultant.

Yoga Fits In with Gerda Krebs

I am so honored to have been asked by the legendary Gerda Krebs to appear on two episodes of her show, Yoga Fits In.  My Mom watched the original Yoga Fits In with Gerda Krebs many years ago, so for me to have the opportunity to appear on the new version of Yoga Fits In was a full-circle moment.  Watch the episodes here:
